Kate Serebrianskaia (Silver) is a New Zealand-based artist originally from Siberia, Russia. Her work explores ways of capturing these fleeting moments of her own consciousness in painterly impressions of the surrounding world. Being into painting since her childhood but choosing foreign languages as her primary career path, Serebrianskaia always knew that painting was her calling and something that she could not live without. Consequently, Serebrianskaia had a chance to attend the Summer School at St.Petersburg Repin Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied classical drawing and oil painting, run by professors of the Academy. Later, Serebrianskaia got a degree in Visual Arts that enriched her theoretical knowledge and improved her artistic skills.
Having followed a representative approach to art for a long time, Serebrianskaia began feeling cramped in the existing framework and wanted to refresh the direction of her creative practice. So, getting the Master of Creative Practice Degree from Unitec Institute of Technology in July 2024 became a pivotal event in her personal and artistic life, allowing her to approach painting from a fundamentally different angle. Being taught within rigid rules of figurative painting and drawing in terms of composition, use of colour, form and accuracy of the image, Serebrianskaia now strives to embody the elusive nature of a moment that slips away with each passing breath through acrylic inks and fluids.

This painting is genuinely translucent, consisting of more than 20 layers of acrylic inks and fluids. It represents my interpretation of the transcendental nature of our reality.
The names of the paintings are different numbers in Pāli, an ancient language of the Indian subcontinent spoken in the time of Budha.
In February 2024, I had a chance to participate in the 10-day Buddhist meditation course called Vipassana. Vipassana is a silent retreat that teaches a form of meditation believed to be the original technique practised by Buddha. It is focused on self-observation and mindfulness.
After about 100 strict meditation hours, I realised that this course was a life-changing experience for me in both personal and creative matters.
I not only learned how to meditate continuously and found peace with myself, but I also cleared my mind, which drastically influenced my creative practice and approach to painting. After Vipassana, I realised I wanted to embody the transient nature of reality through my abstract paintings. -Kate Serebrianskaia-
